TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — Chemical manufacturer 3M Co. will pay at least $10.3 billion to settle lawsuits over contamination of many U.S. public drinking water systems with potentially harmful compounds used in firefighting foam and a host of consumer products, the company said Thursday. The deal would compensate water providers for pollution with per- and polyfluorinated substances, known collectively as PFAS — a broad class of chemicals used in nonstick, water- and grease-resistant products such as clothing and cookware.Described as “forever chemicals” because they don’t degrade naturally in the environment, PFAS have been linked to a variety of health problems, including liver and immune-system damage and some cancers. The compounds have been detected at varying levels in drinking water around the nation. The Environmental Protection Agency in March proposed strict limits on two common types, PFOA and PFOS, and said it wanted to regulate four others. JEFFERSON CITY, Mo -- Following a deadly school shooting in St. Louis last fall, the state is offering a free emergency alert app for districts across Missouri. More than 30% of the state's school districts have already signed up for the app. It's designed to streamline emergency response by allowing teachers and other school staff to alert the rest of the school and first responders through their phone within seconds. "The hope is that it never has to be used, but if it saves seconds, it could wind up saving lives," communications director with the Department of Public Safety Mike O'Connell said. Teachers, administrators and staff at more than 700 school buildings across Missouri will start school this fall with a new app on their phone for emergencies. "Normally, you would call [911] and give your name and your cell phone location," chief marketing officer for Raptor Technologies David Rogers said. "This provides an enhanced location, it provides the name of the tea...‘Wheat Ridge Kardashians’: Alleged makeup thieves in viral post nabbed in California

For more than a decade, residents in Colton have been experiencing a decline in water quality and many people who live there say they are feeling ignored by officials at the local water district. While the city has put out notifications about the water quality on their social media channels, residents who spoke to KTLA say one of the main problems is they never know when the water is going to be changing from a clear color to brown. “It’s okay right now, it’s clear,” Colton resident Cheyenne Hendricks said as she ran her water, “but it could be running just like this and all of a sudden it’s coming out looking like coffee.” The periodic brown water spews out of faucets and showerheads for many people living in Colton. For Hendricks and her family, she says the brown water flows about once a week, or once every two weeks at least. The lifelong Colton resident added that she’s fed up with the brown colored water, saying it happens at random times and can last from mi...Woman hospitalized following blaze in downtown Los Angeles
