The University of Minnesota Board of Regents aims to appoint an interim president in the next two weeks and will consider both internal and external candidates, but not if they’re interested in the permanent job.Regents during a special meeting Thursday favored a relatively quick and controlled process handled by the board itself over a wide search heavy on public engagement.A May 5 hiring target would give the interim leader about five weeks to work alongside President Joan Gabel, who plans to start taking vacation time on June 9 before starting her new job as University of Pittsburgh chancellor.Regents spent five hours Tuesday discussing what they want from an interim president and what they’re willing to pay for it.They reached consensus around excluding candidates who might later seek a permanent appointment as president.“Being a candidate is distracting and influences some of the decision-making,” said Mary Davenport.“I don’t want someone who’s using the interim period as their...Rhinebeck man accused of rape

Broncos coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton took questions for 50 minutes ahead of next week’s NFL Draft on Thursday afternoon and covered plenty of ground from guards to golf carts. Here are five quick takeaways:Denver still adamant about keeping JeudyIf the Broncos plan to trade Jerry Jeudy on draft weekend, they’re continuing to obfuscate their intentions. In fact, Paton didn’t say outright that the team would exercise the receiver’s fifth-year option ahead of the May 2 deadline, but he certainly made it sound like Jeudy would be around after the draft to make that decision.“We’re really high on Jerry,” Paton said. “We don’t anticipate doing anything with Jerry. … We like Jerry. He’s going to be here.”Draft doesn’t have to go defense Denver spent a boatload of free agency dollars on offense to shore up its offensive line and add depth in the skill positions, but Paton and Payton said that ...Colorado Rapids waive 18-year-old Homegrown forward Dantouma “Yaya” Toure

Denver International Airport’s $2.1 billion terminal renovation project needs stronger management and oversight of its major contractor to ensure the airport isn’t overpaying for work, city auditors found in a long-awaited report released Thursday. The audit spurred push-back from airport project officials, who defended both their handling of the quick effort to reboot the troubled project in late 2019, after DIA terminated its prior project contracting team, and their oversight of the new contract arrangement. Since Hensel Phelps Construction took over the Great Hall Project three years ago, work has proceeded more smoothly — though with a vastly expanded budget and a timeline extended by several years, to 2028.But auditors questioned a lack of documentation supporting the selection of Hensel Phelps through a quick, streamlined bid process in which DIA limited the pool to companies that had done previous airport work. They also were critical of DIA’s oversigh...Compton officials use 4/20 to publicize crackdown on illegal dispensaries

Thursday may be 4/20 — cannabis' big day — but Compton city officials had a unique way to celebrate. The city joined with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to discuss the nine illegal dispensaries that have been shut down and send a warning to those that remain under the radar."This is a great example that other local cities can use a framework to shut down illegal operations in their own communities," said Capt. Terrance Bell. Part party, part call to action: A look at pot holiday 4/20 Not only are dispensaries banned in Compton, but some of the locations were selling more than just marijuana. At certain places, customers could find mushrooms, hard drugs and even weapons, officials said. "These businesses are attracting violence, murders, robberies, fights," said City Councilmember Andre Spicer. "They're, again, just a nuisance to our neighborhoods."Also targeted are businesses like banks and landlords that provide services to these criminal enterprises, officials said. ...Latest news
