By Rebecca Blackwell and Laura Bargfeld | Associated PressHORSESHOE BEACH, Fla. — The worst of Hurricane Idalia left residents of a region of tight-knit communities trying to find places to live as they rebuild — if they decide it’s even worth it — and waiting potentially weeks for electricity to be restored after winds and water took out entire power grids.Idalia came ashore Wednesday in Florida’s sparsely populated Big Bend region, where places to fish and paddle are connected by swamps. The scope of the disaster came into sharper focus Friday. A power cooperative warned its 28,000 customers it might take two weeks to restore electricity. Emergency officials promised trailers would arrive over the weekend to provide housing in an area that didn’t have much to begin with.“We’ll build back. We’ll continue to fish and enjoy catching the redfish and trout and eating oysters and catching scallops and eating them,” said real estate agent Jimmy Bu...57 guards, officers released after being held hostage in Ecuador

SANTA CLARA — Police discourage retail workers from confronting shoplifters, but a Grocery Outlet employee on Thursday decided to photograph the license plate of thieves fleeing with $590 worth of energy drinks. Her reward: The bandits nearly ran her over. The employee, described as a quiet woman, took Friday off from work because she was “shaken up,” said store manager CeCe Ruiz. The staff are told to prioritize their safety, Ruiz said, but she understands the instinct to want to intervene. She’s done it herself, despite her boss telling her not to.“If you make it too easy,” Ruiz said, “they will come every day.”The confrontation Thursday highlights the growing dangers California retail workers face amid a surge of thefts that are frustrating retailers and shoppers and driving political debate over the best way to deal with property and drug crimes. These seemingly minor crimes can have deadly consequences. (KRON) -- The Bay Area's two Pac-12 schools, Cal and Stanford, both announced Friday that they are moving to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) starting in the 2024-25 academic year. Berkeley and Stanford aren't exactly located on the "Atlantic Coast."Some in opposition to these California schools joining the ACC cite the long and grueling travel having to go coast to coast to compete in sporting events. Even the closest ACC school is farther than what Cal or Stanford had to travel for any Pac-12 conference game. How far is the farthest ACC school from Cal and Stanford? The answer is Boston College at over 3,000 miles away from both Bay Area schools. CLEVELAND (AP) — With a limited budget, the Guardians surprised many people around baseball when they claimed pitchers Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo López and Matt Moore off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels this week.Cleveland manager Terry Francona was one of them, even after being given a heads up by team president Chris Antonetti and general manager Mike Chernoff.“They told me we might be adding somebody, so I went to sleep Wednesday thinking something might happen,” Francona said Friday. “Never in a million years did I think it would be three guys.”López and Moore were both in uniform as the Guardians began a three-game series with Tampa Bay. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina coach Mack Brown is calling out the NCAA for dragging its heels on the case of transfer wide receiver Devontez Walker, who has not yet been ruled eligible.Walker, the Tar Heels’ presumed No. 1 receiver, transferred from Kent State, where he played two seasons after a year at North Carolina Central when he did not play because the season was canceled. NCAA rules generally allow players to transfer freely once. Brown said Walker had enrolled at UNC in January, just days before the NCAA revised rules to limit waivers for two-time transfers for evaluation on a case-by-case basis. The NCAA denied the waiver for Walker to play immediately and UNC appealed. The Tar Heels open the season against South Carolina on Saturday night.“The NCAA’s unwillingness to provide clarification over the last few weeks has left us in this position,” Brown said in a statement released by the school. “At this point, everyone knows the details of Tez’s journey ...Chad Green poised to make Blue Jays debut after rehabbing from Tommy John surgery
