Ask Amy: Friend plans to lose her home, gain an RV Dear Amy: My BFF and I met in grade school. We’ve lost touch on and off, but we always find our way back, usually when she’s losing a relationship. The last loss was two Christmases ago, when after 10 years together her partner “Benny” called her at work, telling her: “This isn’t working anymore, I’m moving out today.”It was rough. She had custody of her toddler grandson who she thought Benny would help her to raise.I was there for her. She got therapy and started choosing to focus on herself, versus always needing to be with a guy.Six months later, she met “Chris” on a dating website. He was one of five or six guys she was seeing. After four months, she decided she really liked him, and they became exclusive.I’ve seen her four times since then. Now I’m lucky if I talk to her once a month. Her birthday is coming up, so we caught up.She told me that her daughter and the daughter’s girlfriend are taking over her house, while she will live in the basement.Related ArticlesAsk Amy | ...

Utah must keep riding its defense until Rising returns. Notre Dame-Duke is Week 5’s best matchup

Utah must keep riding its defense until Rising returns. Notre Dame-Duke is Week 5’s best matchup Utah has quietly emerged as a top-10 team with convalescing quarterback Cam Rising yet to play a down and a defense that so far has put up better numbers than the 2019 unit that is regarded as the Utes’ best ever.To be determined is whether the Utes can keep doing what they’ve been doing as they move along in a stretch in which five of seven opponents are ranked. The offense has been limited without Rising, who hasn’t played since he tore his ACL in the Rose Bowl. The defense has allowed one touchdown to each of its first four opponents, but such dominance is unlikely to continue with Southern California, Oregon and Washington — all national top-three offenses — on the horizon. The immediate concern is Saturday’s game at No. 19 Oregon State, which is coming off a loss at Washington State and needs a win to avoid dropping off in the Pac-12 race. There are three other games matching Top 25 teams: No. 24 Kansas at No. 3 Texas, No. 13 LSU at No. 20 Mississippi and ...

Philippines says it will remove any barrier China installs in the disputed South China Sea

Philippines says it will remove any barrier China installs in the disputed South China Sea MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Filipino forces would dismantle any floating barrier that China’s coast guard may install in the disputed South China Sea, a Philippine admiral said Wednesday after Manila infuriated China by removing one such obstruction in a contested shoal. Philippine officials strongly condemned the installation last week of a 300-meter (980-foot) -long barrier by Chinese coast guard vessels at the entrance to the lagoon of Scarborough Shoal as a violation of international law and the country’s sovereignty. The barrier has prevented a swarm of Filipino boats from entering the rich fishing area, they said. The shoal lies within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone just west of the main Luzon Island, but has been occupied by China since 2012 as part of a push by Beijing to lay claim to virtually the entire South China Sea. On Monday, the Philippine coast guard said it has complied with an order by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to launch a covert operation to r...

Justin Rose the last bastion of Europe’s old guard as new wave sweeps through Ryder Cup team GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — As the only 40-something playing at this Ryder Cup, Justin Rose has come a long way from being that 17-year-old amateur in a baggy red sweater who holed out for eagle to finish tied fourth in his first British Open in 1998.With age comes experience and that’s what Rose is providing in the European team room, offering what he describes as an “open-door policy” for the four rookies as they attempt to glean what makes the Ryder Cup so special.“If I just make them feel comfortable enough that they want to ask a question,” the 43-year-old Rose said Wednesday, “let’s hear it and I’ll do my best to give some type of perspective.”The last two years of his Ryder Cup journey have given Rose plenty of that.Missing the 2021 matches at Whistling Straits after failing to earn a captain’s pick was a big jolt to a player who had featured in every Ryder Cup since 2008, earning a 60.25 win percentage along the way. It’s a proud record that’s among the very best of all...

Deion Sanders still winning in Black community after first loss at Colorado One of Trevon Hamlet’s core memories from attending the University of Colorado is living on campus his freshman year and being able to count on one hand how many Black people he’d see in a day.Hamlet, who played lacrosse at Colorado from 2014-19 and still lives in the area, was the only Black person on his team in a school where African-American students made up less than 2% of the population. He said a lot of those Black students were athletes.Four years after Hamlet graduated, Colorado’s student makeup doesn’t look much different. But football coach Deion Sanders has turned the Boulder campus into an unexpected cultural phenomenon, where the vivacity and early success of the team has forced the attention of even those who don’t watch college football, with a lot of most support coming from the Black community. “There’s so much Blackness that’s involved in this, and it’s the biggest story in the country,” Hamlet said. “Although you have standard supporters f...
