Local water utility files lawsuit over ‘forever chemicals’

The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission has filed a lawsuit against numerous companies, alleging they knowingly polluted the environment with “forever chemicals.”WSSC said damages received would go toward the cost of updating water treatment methods.In the lawsuit, filed in Maryland’s federal court, the utility names nearly 20 companies — including 3M, Dupont and Chemours — for their manufacturing of fire-suppression foams that contain per- and polyfluoroalkyl, or PFAS.WSSC alleges these companies knowingly concealed the chemicals’ toxicity from the public.PFAS are also found in things like nonstick frying pans, stain repellent, carpet and furniture. MONACO (AP) — Krystsina Tsimanouskaya, the Belarusian sprinter whose team tried to force her out of the Tokyo Olympics, has been declared eligible to represent Poland ahead of the upcoming world championships.Tsimanouskaya’s profile on the website of World Athletics, track and field’s governing body, was updated Monday with a note that she became eligible to compete for Poland the day before.World Athletics generally requires athletes who want to switch allegiance to sit out a three-year waiting period. MADRID (AP) — Giuliano Simeone, son of Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone, successfully underwent surgery on Monday after sustaining a serious leg injury during a preseason game for Spanish league club Alaves.Giuliano Simeone sustained a broken left leg and ligament damage after being fouled from behind in Alaves’ friendly match against Burgos on Sunday. Authorities chased a vehicle after the driver was involved in criminal activity.On Monday morning, live video footage showed a damaged matte gray Lamborghini SUV driving at a high speed on the Florida Turnpike. An aviation unit started following the car after it was involved in several incidents on State Road 836 near 114th Avenue. A new video shows the moment a suspect shot at a moving vehicle at an intersection in Northwest Miami-Dade after a heated dispute on Sunday. According to Miami-Dade Police, they were called in at a so-called “intersection takeover” on Northwest 146th Street and Seventh Avenue. At some point, detectives said, the group started to fight.
